Edgar the Odd Goblin
Edgar Discovers the Sun Stone
Chapter 2 – The Cave
Early one morning, while the other goblins were still sleeping, Edgar took a walk in Shadow Forest, a large, wooded area just west of Goblinton. Shadow Forest was Edgar’s favorite place to visit. He spent most of his free time climbing trees, looking under rocks, splashing in streams, and exploring caves.
While Edgar was wandering about the forest, he happened upon a cave. Edgar knew Shadow Forest like he knew his own bedroom and had taken this same path nearly every time he was in the forest, but he had never seen this cave before. Edgar’s curiosity about this cave got the best of him, and inside the cave he went.
As Edgar ventured further into the cave, he noticed something peculiar. Usually, the deeper one travels into a cave, the darker the cave becomes. Not so inside this cave. The deeper Edgar traveled, the brighter the cave became. At first, it was barely noticeable, and Edgar thought his eyes were adjusting to the darkness, but soon there was no mistaking it. The cave was getting brighter. At first, Edgar thought he had gotten turned around and was heading out of the cave instead of deeper inside, but he wasn’t. Something in the distance was lighting up this cave.
Typically, when goblins, including Edgar, see something bright, they turn the other way. But there was something unusual about this light that attracted Edgar to it. It was almost like the light was pulling Edgar deeper into the cave. Edgar inched closer—step by tiny step—toward the source of the light.
What is that? Edgar thought to himself. And why am I walking toward it instead of running away? But rather than terrifying Edgar, the light filled him with wonder and peace, so he crept deeper into the cave.
Edgar peeked his head over a ledge and saw exactly what the light was—a shiny, smooth stone, like nothing he had seen before. It looked like a large pearl, but something made it glow brighter than a star.
Maybe it’s a dragon’s egg, Edgar thought, and immediately checked his surroundings for a dragon mom. No, it’s too small to be a dragon’s egg.
Maybe it’s a fairy’s bed. Edgar chuckled at the thought. Fairies aren’t real, Edgar thought, then quickly clapped his hands just in case they were real, and he accidentally killed one just now by thinking they weren’t.
“I need to get a closer look,” Edgar spoke aloud, startling himself as his voice broke the silence. Edgar slipped out from behind the boulder and inched his way closer to the stone.
